What is fluency? Fluency is “the ability to read accurately, automatically, and with expression.” Fluency is a foundational skill and essential for proficient reading. The more fluent a reader is, the better he/she will be able to comprehend a text read orally or silently. Some researched-based strategies teachers use to support fluency are repeated readings, reader’s theater, reciting poetry, listening to read alouds, scooping sentences in phrases, and independent reading. Below are some activities parents can do to support fluency at home:
Read to your child
Play word games
Encourage your child to re-read favorite books
Provide audiobooks
