Spelling Practice Strategy

When children learn to spell, they use speech sounds and the different letter combinations represented by those sounds, such as vowel combinations, syllables, and word parts. Research shows that not only does spelling lead to better writing, but also accelerates reading progress by facilitating vocabulary growth and word recognition. Below is a research-based strategy to help your child study his/her spelling words.

READ - the word and break into syllables.

SOUND - the letters in the word.

COVER - the word.

WRITE - the word without looking.

CHECK - to see if the word is spelled correctly.
