Fluency Checklist and Strategy

Fluency is when you read accurately, automatically, and with expression. When you read fluently, the better you will be able to understand what you read. Below is one way for your child to practice fluency at home.

  Kid Friendly Fluency Checklist

  • Accuracy - I read all of the words correctly.

  • Rate - I read 3 or 4 words at a time in nice smooth chunks. I was not too fast and not too slow.

  • Expression - I read with emotion and did not sound like a robot.

  • Punctuation - I paid attention to punctuation by pausing at periods and commas. I changed my voice with exclamation and question marks.

Directions to use with your child..

  1. Choose a paragraph in your independent reading book that you’ve already read.

  2. Re-read the paragraph silently.

  3. Read the paragraph again out loud to an adult or record yourself reading out loud..

  4. Use the checklist on the right to evaluate your fluency.
